This blog is exactly what the title specifies, cheap ways to get about. With gasoline going through the roof all over the world for the average person its time to quit thinking in the hotrod frame of mind. Big V8's, wild cams, and huge fuel injectors and carburators that dump fuel in the engine in order to make more power are fast becoming a thing of the past except in industrial and raceing applications. About the only place you will find big wide tires on the roads these days is on a few 4 wheel drive trucks as wide tires cut down on fuel economy, the bigger the tire, the more power it takes to push it hence more gas.

Walking
Now the cheapest way to get about still is and always has been plain old walking. You can't beat walking when it comes to saving gas anyway you look at it. If you live within a couple miles of anyplace you need to go try walking, not only will you not spend any money on gas, but walking is one of the best forms of exercise there is, you'll look better, feel better, and think of all the money you'll save just by not cranking up the car. Need to pick up something? get a back pack or a small push cart, even a kids wagon will get the job done, after all you won't be walking that far and all you need is something to carry stuff with. I find that wearing comfortable shoes and lose fitting clothes makes the walk all the more enjoyable and it helps if what you have on is bright or noticeable so as to attract the attention of others going by in cars (if you happen to be going in a place where there's no side walks).
Bicycles
After walking would come bicycles. If you don't know how to ride a bicycle you should learn cause its one of those things that once you learn how you never forget. I learned when I was a small child and after I learned I spent half my life on a bicycle. Besides the fact its great exercise, its a lot of fun, and its 10 times faster than walking and the only problems you'll have is getting up a steep hill in which case you simply get off and walk (push) your bicycle up to the top of the hill and jump back on.
Bicycles come in all forms and shapes and sizes. There are mens bicycles, womens bicycles, and kids bicycles. Some come in the basic form and others have multiple speeds. On a good multispeed you can simply go to low and pedal right up a hill without haveing to get off and push as the lower the gear the easier it is to pedal.
There are even motorized bicycles. Some are electric but most are gasoline, driven by a small engine or motor mounted to drive either the front tire or the rear wheel. Most motorized bikes come in kit form consisting or the engine, fuel tank, and brackets and instructions to mount it with and rangeing in price from a couple hundred dollars to over 400 bucks, or if you are mechanically inclined you could build one yourself from spare parts.

Mopeds
Motorized bicycles a little too much for you? Then you should try a Moped. Mopeds are just a fancy way of saying motorized bicycle but they are factory built and come with their own style of frame. Some of the lower powered Mopeds even come with pedals to assist in getting up those long hills. Mopeds as a rule are not very fast, the larger ones have a top speed of around 40-45 miles per hour, but they are great on gas. If you don't mind going slow and staying off the highways, then a Moped might just be your ticket.

Motor Scooters
Still need a little more get up and go? The next step in the line would be Motor Scooters. A Motor Scooter to a Moped is like a motorized bicycle is to a pedal bicycle. Motor Scooters come with larger engines usually situated just under where a rider sits. They get good gas mileage and can be driven on the highway and are light weight and easy to manuver. You will pay a little more at the gas pump than a Moped but haveing that extra power might just be worth it to you.

Motorcycles
Next in line would be the full fledged Motorcycle. Motorcycles come in all different sizes from 50cc's to giant 1700cc's and the gas mileage goes down the bigger the engine, so for economys sake I'll mention the 250cc. Engines that size will get you up to 70 mph while still getting a good 40-45 miles per gallon. Motorcycles differ from Motor Scooters in that the engine is mounted under and in front of the rider and in my opinion balance is better haveing the weight distributed along the whole length of the vehicle rather than both the engine and the rider all in one place, and is more stable at higher speeds.
